Van Aubel & Shaw win the ARC13 Chair Design Award

De Architect presented the ARC Awards for the second time yesterday. Van Aubel & Shaw won the ARC13 Chair Design Award with their Well Proven Chair. The chair design prize is an initiative of the de Architect and Royal Ahrend.

“Ahrend is a furniture designer and manufacturer based in the Netherlands,” explained Eugene Sterken, CEO of Koninklijke Ahrend NV. “As we ourselves are in the business of creating chairs, we see the ARC 2013 Chair Design Award as a way of giving young and talented designers a platform for expression and of stimulating innovation in the sector.”

ARC13 prizes are awarded in three categories: Chair Design, Architecture Design and Interior Design. The Well Proven Chair by Van Aubel & Shaw has won the ARC13 Award for the best chair design. The designers carried out extensive research before selecting the material for their chair. They decided to mix wood shavings with bio-resin; the result is a light and durable material. Considerable thought was also given to the use of colour.

Jan Brouwer, chair of the judging panel for the Chair Design Award, praised the winning design: “The primary objective of the award is to promote innovation in chair design, with a special emphasis on technological innovation, and the Well Proven Chair met these requirements better than any other design.”

The ARC13 Chair Design Award is presented each year to the best chair design created by a designer in the preceding twelve months. In assessing the entries, the panel considers the functionality and character of the chair. The use of materials is also an important consideration.
