ROC Friese Poort

For the ROC Friese Poort, a sustainable design concept was conceived to provide space for more than 13,500 students in vocational education. Both young people and adults had to get a place in an environment where a wide range of training and training courses are offered. Previously, Ahrend provided the facility concept and furniture for the Centrum Duurzaam  (Centre for sustainability) in Leeuwarden.

The Assignment

ROC Friese Poort had the wish for a campus environment where students feel at home. Not one big building, but four separate buildings, each with their own faculty. ROC Friese Poort has increased its own ambitions for sustainability during the construction of the school buildings. The building feels light and transparent.

The Solution

Ahrend has developed a sustainable design for classrooms, teachers' offices, executive rooms, meeting rooms, restaurants and creative classrooms (Building A Arts & Culture), as computer facilities (Building B Technology) and Health and Welfare. For example, all campuses are separated and organized and can be flexibly upgraded and shipped when needed. Under the BREEAM flag, the sustainability requirement has been steadily increased during the project, and great results have been achieved in terms of sustainability.
