Henk Verkerke was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 1938. From 1973 until 1998 he worked for Ahrend. He designed amongst other things the Ahrend 220. This office chair has been in production for over 20 years and is considered to be the world's first Eco-Design chair.
After graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1960, he worked for four years as a designer in Düsseldorf and seven years for a department-store concern in Milan. He returned to the Netherlands in 1972, and started work for Ahrend as a designer a year later. He spent a number of years as Friso Kramer’s assistant, but since 1982 he and three colleagues have been working for Ahrend’s Produktiebedrijven (production works) on a consultancy basis. Henk Verkerke passed away on 27 May 2015, he was 77 years old.
