Nearly every production process involves water, energy, packaging, transport, and waste, and the same goes for the manufacturing of our furniture. To minimise the impact on the planet, we produce in a responsible way.
This is how we manage water responsibly
All our production facilities consume water. The majority of it is used at our metal hubs in the Netherlands and China. We rely on surface water and tap water for our processes. Water management and conservation have always been top priorities. That's why all our production sites operate with a closed-loop water system, keeping our water usage extremely low. Thanks to investments, we have reduced our water consumption by 44.5%. We neutralise wastewater via a filtration system before it's discharged. We also regularly and independently test its quality for harmful substances to prevent water pollution.
This is how we manage energy
We follow two strategies to make our energy consumption more sustainable: reducing consumption and generating or sourcing renewable energy. Our machinery mainly runs on electricity, while a gas-heated oven is used to paint metal components. We reduce energy consumption by optimising production processes, which decreases the need for gas and electricity. Additionally, we have consolidated production locations over recent years, rendering older machines obsolete.
A portion of the energy we use is generated by solar panels, and we also purchase local renewable energy, such as that from Dutch wind turbines. Over the next few years, all our production sites will be powered by solar energy. These plans are part of our strategy to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050.
CO2 Performance Ladder – Step 5
We hold a CO2 Performance Ladder certification at Step 5, as we actively monitor, analyse, and report on our energy consumption. Annual updates are available in the yearly report.
‘The Ahrend Ease packaging is now made entirely of paper instead of plastic.’
As little packaging material as possible
We use a minimal amount of packaging material for our products, opting for recyclable blankets, wooden pallets, recycled cardboard, and recycled LDPE film. With a return system for our packaging, we ensure reuse. For this reason, we prefer not to use staples, glue, or tape in our packaging, making them easier to reuse. Additionally, we continuously evaluate and revise our packaging concepts. For example, we’ve redesigned our Ahrend Ease packaging: plastic inserts, covers, and tape have been replaced with 100% cardboard packaging, including paper tape.
We calculate the total CO2 footprint of our product portfolio.
Our ambition is to achieve fully emission-free deliveries to all customers in the Benelux by 2030. That’s why we invest annually in expanding the number of electric trucks in our fleet.
Through a closed-loop return system with our suppliers, we have significantly reduced wood waste in recent years. Wood waste is now directly recycled into new chipboard in collaboration with our suppliers.
