The story behind our showroom in Düsseldorf
Ahrend’s new showroom in Düsseldorf brings our vision of sustainable, future-proof workspaces to life. This space is more than just a showcase for design — it is a statement of circular ambition. Here, we combine revitalised furniture with new circular designed products to demonstrate that a modern workspace can be both stylish and sustainable. Discover how design, reuse and innovation come together in our showroom in Düsseldorf.
The Düsseldorf showroom
The German Ahrend team relocated from Cologne to Düsseldorf, right at the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region (North Rhine-Westphalia). This central location allows clients and colleagues to commute by public transport or bicycle, making the journey to and from our showroom more efficient – and more sustainable.
Relocating also opened the door to new collaborations. By sharing the showroom with Office Group, we gained access to a valuable network of partners. Together, we created a space where various setups could be tested in practice. This enables us to advise our clients based on real-world experience – practical, focused on wellbeing, and designed for functionality.
Felix Kröncke: "In our showroom, we aim to showcase the most modern and forward-thinking work environments – with circularity as the guiding principle. Of course, we also feature new furniture, but we have intentionally incorporated a significant proportion of revitalised pieces to demonstrate that 'as good as new' is barely distinguishable from brand new. We have refurbished furniture from various areas of the Cologne showroom and reintroduced it here. Additionally, we are presenting products that already contain a high proportion of recycled materials."
Refurbished products
The use of circular furniture can reduce the CO₂ footprint by up to 90%. That’s why we used as many revitalised products as possible – including refurbished desks from the “Balance” programme and even plants from our former showroom in Austria. Revitalisation means more than new upholstery or colours – it’s about giving furniture a second life.
A good example of this is the lighting in the showroom: it’s over ten years old. Sabine de Schutter from Studio de Schutter supported us in adapting the luminaires to our current needs – including a new film covering and conversion to LED technology.
The kitchen was not newly purchased either, but adopted according to the “Urban Mining” principle: it originally came from a former tenant in the building, was refurbished, and fitted with a new worktop – made of high-quality wood previously used in a renowned kitchen showroom.
Furniture made of recycled materials
Many of our furniture designs have been thoughtfully crafted with high recycled content. The Ahrend A2020 office chair was one of the world’s first Ecodesign products. Since then, Ecodesign principles have become a standard part of our product development. We apply these through our circular design strategy, considering the entire lifecycle of our products. That’s why we use materials responsibly and continuously improve our furniture to reduce its environmental footprint. Our new ‘Remode’ chair series, for example, already consists of over 50% recycled materials.
‘We help companies achieve their sustainability goals, while creating modern working environments. For example, all furnishings can be rented through our Furniture as a Service model. Smart and sustainable – what more could you want?’
